I have always been interested in Science and Technology. I think Science lets us know how our reality is and Technology is the way we use that knowledge for our benefit.
I started coding at the age of 10 (1989) when my parents gave me a ZX Spectrum 128 +2 and a book about the BASIC language. My first program was a percentage calculator. My teacher taught me about the percentages at school, I made it that evening and used it to correct my homework. Since then, I’m up to date on the advances in technology.
Although I could have studied study Computer Science, I decided for Biochemistry. My curiosity about knowing how cells work made me to change my mind. I did my doctorate on type 1 diabetes. I wanted to contribute with my effort to advance the study on a solution to this disease. It was a very important stage in my life. Doctorate is tough, but worth. It makes you be meticulous, work hard, independent, self-taught, critical and problem solver. I had to know the state of the art in my field, hypothesize, design experiments, collect and analyze data, create visualizations, and share the knowledge in national and international congresses.
When I got my Ph.D., I realized I liked statistics. So I began a M.Sc. in Bioinformatics and Biostatistics. It was perfect for me because it brought together the three areas that I like. I learnt R and improved my skills in Python (I learnt Python by myself a few years before because I have always wanted to know a programming language). I got a GPA of 9.4 out of 10 and two honors: Omic Data Analysis and Machine Learning. I was surprised how a computer is able to learn from data. I knew about Data Science and I started to consider it as a field where I’d like to work.
I finished the master and I began a M.Sc. in Data Science, but I inmmediatly joined as data scientist at Quental and then at Baobab Soluciones. Now I can say I’ve found the professional field I really love. Data Science lets me extract knowledge from data and use it to make better decisions. I’m still doing Science, but I’m not limited to a specific area; so I can feed my hunger of curiosity. Furthermore, Data Science tool number and uses are huge and growing; that motivates me to be updated.
Data Scientist is the most exciting job for me.
